Travel 2020: The show that presses the right buttons
1 July 2010

The announcement of the Travel 2020 event has been exceptionally encouraging and supportive of the mission of exploring just how the face of travel is changing with new technologies and approaches to customer service.

Being run in partnership with RTIG-Inform, the specialist for those in real time information, endorsement has also come from the Institute of Customer Service, Traveline, ITS UK and The Ten Per Cent Club. Other relationships with key bodies will be announced soon.

The support owes much to the fact that this cross-modal event will be focussed on the travel offer and experience rather than the hardware on which people ride. Whilst vehicles and their specification are of crucial importance in determining the quality of public transport there is much more going on in the offer to customers that can affect their choices. From information about services and how they are running to ease of purchasing a ticket or even not needing one at all, the whole way in which people relate to bus, train and also air and other forms of passenger transport is changing rapidly.

At the event, which will take place at London's Brit Insurance Oval exhibition and conference suite on September 29-30, five key themes will be addressed. They are:
  • information and communication,
  • ticketing and payment,
  • customer service and the journey experience,
  • access and interchange and
  • sustainable mobility and modal choice.
So far, less than a month after the first announcement, half of the available stand space has been booked with an array of innovative systems and services being profiled. Some are developments specifically for public transport but interestingly other capabilities are being harnessed from outside the sector and come from the worlds of retail, leisure, telecoms and online marketing and sales.

This new world of catering for mobility needs in strikingly different ways and with different products is all about forging partnerships within and beyond the traditional operating community.

There are significant opportunities to be part of this process and organisers Local Transport Today Ltd. are keen to hear from those who would like to be involved with the event.

The pace of change is sometimes frightening, but for those who get it right, and tap into the new techniques and technologies that are emerging, the rewards are potentially great.

The one certainty is that staying the same is not an option.
