Active Commuting designs, builds and operates an end of journey Travel plan solution. This enables employers, councils, business improvement districts, and transport authorities; to provide consistent facilities for commuters who Active Travel.
Established in September 2014, the Active Commuting team, who are keen cycle and run commuters, set out to address their own needs for a facility. They wanted to have showers, lockers, and a secure bike park close to work. However, the high costs of refurbishment, dilapidation, and landlord unwillingness to give a long lease made this too expensive and a risky option. To mitigate the risks, they decided to design and build a portable ‘pop up’ solution. To date they have built and delivered three Active Commuting hubs.
The products include; secure bike parking, showers, lockers and drying rooms constructed in standalone pods. The pods are used to build hubs for active commuters. Easily deployed, they are portable, adaptable and scalable. Meaning, the pods can be configured externally and internally to accommodate different local needs. Think Lego. They can be used in small or large accessible spaces. Easily obtained, the pods can be bought or hired.
As some employers are not able to provide facilities. The company sees a need for hubs to be situated within the public and urban realm. The idea is, by applying a collaborative approach a network could be built. They would be sustainable, accessible and affordable. Making all forms of active travel a realistic option for everyone, regardless of where they work.
