Urban Movement is a transport planning and street design practice that specialises in handling the many, different and often competing demands for movement in towns and cities. We do this in ways that both respond to and influence land use, that respect the built environment, and that help create places people enjoy. We never take design solutions ‘off-the-peg’, because we know that an understanding of the local context is an essential driver of the best design response.

Though small, we comprise significant expertise and experience in the key disciplines of transport planning, traffic engineering, landscape architecture and urban design. Our portfolio comprises a wide range of planning and design responses to complex urban challenges, and covers the following categories of work:

  • Transport strategies and assessments at scales from whole settlements, through large redevelopment sites, to major buildings.

  • Public realm strategies for towns, cities and districts.

  • New designs for challenging urban environments like town centres, high streets, and the public realm around stations.

  • Innovative design to enable walking and cycling.

Recent built projects include busy streets and spaces in Clapham, Camden, Brighton & Hove, Southampton, Sidcup, Southend and Walthamstow. Projects at the detailed design stage, moving towards construction, include Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, a new public space at London’s Old Street roundabout, and Abbey Wood and Hanwell Crossrail stations. Other recent clients for our design and research services relating to walking, cycling and the public realm generally include Transport for London, Cycling Scotland, Newcastle and Carlisle City Councils, and the London Boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Havering, Islington and Lambeth.
